"Art is..."
April 14, 2015
a verb. a process. a journey. an action.
To me, Art is the process of capturing your visual environment, translating that into some manifest interpretation, and being surprised by the results. I don't get hung up about not having a perfect painting nor if I employed the perfect technique. The process is more important than the product, and that's why there's a magic or mystery between those who make art and those that collect it.
Art is, of course, many things to many people.
Art is a product when we see it as a perfect painting, a valuable possession, something fashionable to own, sale & trade, or a topic for sophisticated discussion.
Art is a means of communication. It works as a currency for ideas. It sells our thoughts, tells a story, confirms of faiths, reaffirms our culture, and proclaims our politics. Destroy a peoples' art and you destroy their culture.
Art is a profession. Art is an adverb. Art is an adjective. Art is a weapon. Art continues to be many things.
So when you hear some one declare art is ONE thing, bring to their attention that Art is more diverse than that and if they want respect for their chosen use of art then they need to do they same for others.
